History of the Naples Florida Pier
The Pier in Naples is one of the must-see things when you’re visiting the city. It’s more than 100 years old and has survived countless hurricanes with a few touch-ups over the years.
Did you know that over 1.1 million people visit the Pier every year?
That’s a lot of foot traffic for a simple tourist pier.
In 1888 a Pier was commissioned to be built because during low tide passengers and freight couldn’t be unloaded. Thus a 600ft pier was built.
The construction was finished in 1889 and a post office was added at the end. It had a T-shaped design just like today.
In 1910 there was another 100ft added to the Pier.
In 1922 an unfortunate cigarette set it on fire and the post office was burned down and the Pier was partially damaged.
In 1924 the Pier was extended to 1000ft which made fishermen happy because they could fish in deeper waters.
Leading up to 2000 there were many hurricanes that damaged the Pier and it got fixed over and over to keep the memory alive.
In 2015 there was a major renovation scheduled. Actually, the Pier was closed for many months, and it was reopened in November. The entire wood structure was changed to Brazilian hardwood which is expected to last more than 30 years.
The last cosmetic changes were done in 2017 when another major hurricane hit. The Pier was closed for a few months and now it’s opened and attendance is free.
During these years the bathrooms got increased to accommodate the 1.1M visitors. Whenever you’re in Naples, you have to check out this beautiful historical Pier.
Is there free parking near Naples pier?
